Marvel doesn’t have a lock on mutants, that’s for sure. The latest iteration of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrives this summer, and Mutant Mayhem looks to be a charming (and gorgeously animated) tale just absolutely packed full of mutants—though some dream of going to high school, and some dream of mutant world domination. (Somebody call Magneto!)
Everything you expect is here: Nunchucks! Pizza! Cowabunga! Master Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan, no less)! April O’Neill (Ayo Edebiri)! The be-shelled quartet is voiced by Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo) and Brady Noon (Raphael).
When they discover they’re not the only mutants, things take a turn: Superfly (Ice Cube) wants to rid the world of humans. Can four nice, brave, ninja mutant teen turtles stop him? Or, as the synopsis explains:
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
The rest of the cast includes producer Seth Rogen (Bebop), Maya Rudolph (Cynthia Utrom), John Cena (Rocksteady), Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman), Post Malone (Ray Fillet), Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko), Hannibal Buress (Genghis Frog), Rose Byrne (Leatherhead), and Natasia Demetriou (Wingnut). The film comes from director Jeff Rowe (a staff writer on Disenchantment) and screenwriter Brendan O’Brien (Neighbors).
Head into the sewer—er, theater—on August 4th.
